The guidelines emphasize the importance of integrating archaeological sites into educational programs, promoting cultural understanding, and fostering a sense of national pride. They also stress the importance of ethical and responsible tourism practices. The guidelines are part of a broader effort to leverage China’s rich cultural heritage for educational purposes.

Educational travel activities are designed to enhance students’ understanding of archaeological sites and their significance. These activities can take various forms, such as guided tours, lectures, workshops, and site visits. Educational travel activities are beneficial for students because they provide opportunities for hands-on learning, real-world experience, and cultural immersion. They allow students to engage with the material in a more meaningful way than traditional classroom settings.

In the guidelines, the government stressed safety and the orderly operation of study travel activities. Cultural relics administrative departments at all levels are required to closely monitor the facilities, visitors, and activities related to study tours, taking necessary measures to rectify any issues or suspend operations if necessary. China’s 55 national archaeological site parks received over 67 million visitors in 2023, an increase of 135 percent compared to the previous year. The surge highlights the growing popularity of such parks as a new hot ticket in cultural tourism. ■
