This research highlights the impact of modern life on children’s sleep. The study also revealed that children are increasingly struggling with sleep due to the pressures of academic performance, social media, and the constant bombardment of information.

The CEO of the educational travel group, Anthony Jones, highlighted the impact of technology on children’s sleep patterns and academic performance. He emphasized that excessive screen time, particularly on social media platforms, is contributing to sleep deprivation and anxiety in children. Jones’s statement aligns with research findings that have shown a strong correlation between screen time and sleep disturbances. Studies have demonstrated that the blue light emitted from electronic devices can suppress melatonin production, a hormone crucial for regulating sleep cycles. Furthermore, the constant exposure to social media and its curated content can trigger anxiety and stress in children, leading to sleep disturbances.

The study found that children are increasingly turning to technology for relaxation. This is particularly true for younger children, with 40 per cent of children aged 5-11 using technology for relaxation. This is a significant increase from previous years.
